Xavier Shay

Xavier Shay

Hello, pleased to be meeting you. I make computers do wonderful things, swing dance, enjoy exercise, live vegan, and I teach others how to do the same. I am in my mid-twenties and live in San Francisco, CA.

Email

I reply to all email sent to hello@xaviershay.com, so do write.

Twitter

I use Twitter, Goodreads and Ten Arms actively. Facebook reluctantly.

I blog about books and politics in one place, and code in another.

Code

I work at Square as an engineering manager on the platform engineering team.

I am very active in the open source community, sourcing over 50 projects on Github including the Enki blog platform, TufteGraph for javascript graphing and Kronic for date formatting and parsing. I am a core team member of RSpec and Bundler, and a Ruby on Rails contributor.

I have spoken at RubyConf, RailsConf, and many regional conferences. You can find recordings at Confreaks.

In 2010 I travelled the world running a series of Ruby on Rails workshops titled Your Database Is Your Friend Training. I blog about code at Robot Has No Heart and used to write a weekly column for RubySource.

I have worked on many big commercial Ruby on Rails projects including Square (current), The Conversation, ClearGrain, and Redbubble. I made and maintain the Vegan Melbourne website.

Personal Development

My brother and I wrote the personal development blog TwoShay and ran a regular month long vegan mentoring group Vegan Month. Both are on hold while I'm at Square, but I continue to practice what I preached.

Swing Dancing

I have been swing dancing for more than half a decade. I irregularly teach, and run two dancing related websites: LindyLog for keeping a dance diary, and EventHand for dance event management.
